Today there is a solar eclipse occurring in the sign of Libra, a celestial event that happens roughly twice a year and features a perfect alignment of the earth, moon and the sun.

The result is an obscuring of the light of either the sun (solar, or new moon eclipse) or moon (lunar, or full moon eclipse) from our vantage point here on planet earth.

Now, it is true that one can only view a solar eclipse in certain parts of globe at a time, but the effects of this incredible moment can be felt by everyone everywhere- especially by those of us who are “tuned in” to this energy.

Eclipses tend to “supercharge” the impact of a new or full moon and create even more of a gravitational pull that is most easily felt as the tides within the element of water, not only in our oceans, lakes, and rivers, but also creates a pull at the water that makes up most of our own human bodies.

This is why many of us feel more emotional during full and new moons, and especially during eclipses.

Ancient people all over the globe noticed eclipses, and even began to track, record, and predict them, as well as created their own mythology about what it was that they were witnessing happening in the sky.

Many indigenous cultures imaging that they were witnessing an animal swallow the sun, or that the sun and moon were coming together as lovers (my personal favorite), or that the gods were angry at us humans and decided to take away the light of the sun or moon as punishment.

Many cultures considered eclipses to be a “bad omen”, or a sign that something fated or negative is about to occur, but this is more than likely because the way that eclipses work is that they disrupt the status quo of the energy flow between the sun and the moon, so because we human beings are made up of this energy as well and are therefore impacted by it, eclipses do tend to well, make things happen and bring in change.

I like to see eclipses as little moments in time where the sun, moon, and earth all come together to give us a little “reboot” – similar to turning off a light switch or powering down an electronic device.

It is a chance to reflect on the path you are on, and to make a change or a course correction if you find that one is needed.

And today, this solar eclipse is happening in the sign of Libra, which is often associated with the idea of justice and equality, I think it is a powerful moment for us all to reflect on all of the injustices, hate, prejudice, inequality, violence, and even war that are happening right now on planet earth.

And perhaps this eclipse is a moment to “reboot” and start again, or even reincarnate now and begin on a new path, to change who we are and who we want to become in the future.

And so, today as we experience this solar eclipse, may we all commit ourselves to creating a new future for everyone here on planet earth that features more love, more giving, more understanding, compassion, justice, and equality for all beings everywhere.

Happy Solar Eclipse in Libra!
